Dimethyl Fumarate

Dimethyl Fumarate

Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H8O4. It is an ester of fumaric acid, with two methyl groups attached to the carboxyl groups. DMF is primarily known for its applications in medicine, particularly in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) and psoriasis.

  • Pharmaceutical Uses:

    1. Multiple Sclerosis (MS):

Dimethyl fumarate is widely used as an oral medication for treating relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS).

    • Mechanism of Action: DMF is thought to reduce inflammation and protect nerve cells from damage by activating the Nrf2 (nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor 2) pathway. This pathway helps combat oxidative stress, which is a contributing factor in MS.
    • Benefits: It helps reduce the frequency of relapses and slows disease progression in MS patients.

    2. Psoriasis:

DMF has also been used to treat moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, primarily in Europe. It is part of a combination therapy called Fumaderm, which contains both dimethyl fumarate and monoethyl fumarate salts.
