Executive / Sr. Executive – Technology Transfer
Technology Transfer (R&D Coordination)
The Chemical Engineer in this role acts as the vital technical bridge between laboratory-scale synthesis (R&D) and commercial manufacturing, ensuring the seamless, safe, and efficient scale-up of new chemical processes — from initial lab evaluation and pilot-scale trials through to full commercial validation. The role works closely with R&D, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Supply Chain, and EHS teams to ensure smooth scale-up, process optimization, and commercialization while maintaining product quality, safety, regulatory compliance, and cost efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Process Scale-Up & Evaluation: Observe critical reaction and purification steps in the lab to evaluate scalability and feasibility for plant-scale equipment; provide process engineering inputs on unit operations (chlorination, esterification, crystallization, distillation) and reaction kinetics/thermodynamics; review scale-up calculations, mass balances, and heat/energy transfer dynamics.
- Technology Transfer Documentation: Compile, author, and review Technology Transfer Packages (TTPs), Technology Transfer Reports, and Master Batch Records (MBRs); prepare material and energy balance sheets, process flow diagrams (PFDs), and equipment mapping grids; collaborate with QA on analytical method transfers and change controls.
- Trial & Validation Execution: Provide on-site technical support during pilot plant trials (25 kg to 1 MT campaigns) and commercial validation batches; track KPIs like batch cycle times, raw material yields, and product purity; identify process bottlenecks and propose data-driven optimization strategies.
- Process Safety & EHS Compliance: Ensure process safety compliance for inbound R&D processes via HAZOP studies and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR); assess safety parameters of volatile raw materials (e.g. phosphorus trichloride, chlorinated solvents) and establish safe handling protocols.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as the primary point of contact between R&D scientists, Plant Operations, QC, QA, and Engineering teams; coordinate with QC/QA to ensure COAs and analytical data (GC/HPLC) align with scale-up expectations.
Candidate Profile & Requirements
- Education: B.Tech / B.E. in Chemical Engineering, or M.Sc. in Organic / Industrial Chemistry from a recognized university.
- Experience: 4–7 years of hands-on experience in technology transfer, process development, or pilot plant operations within fine chemicals, specialty chemicals, or API/pharmaceutical manufacturing.
- Process Simulation: Familiarity with process engineering / simulation software (e.g. Aspen HYSYS, Dynochem) is highly preferred.
- Scale-Up Knowledge: Strong grasp of unit operations, equipment mapping, mass-transfer limits, and reaction kinetics.
- Compliance: Basic understanding of cGMP guidelines, regulatory audit practices, and GxP documentation protocols.
- Soft Skills: Excellent cross-functional communication; strong analytical thinking and root-cause problem-solving; able to work under tight production timelines and manage evolving project schedules.
